Relationship Counselling – “Why do I feel life is so difficult?”

Why do I so often feel guilty about something or someone, or ‘different’ in some way. Or find it hard to deal with the opposite sex, personal and family life. Why do even the smallest things seem impossible? Why do I have a difficulty with work relationships? Why do things go round and round inconclusively?

These situations can feel like a crisis. Sometimes it’s a relationship not working. You or another person may be dealing with depression. An event has gone wrong in your life. A parent, family member or partner dies, and you may not have been able to say what you wanted to say when they were alive, giving rise to sadness and regret.

For most people, it comes down to a relationship with a loved one, or an inner conflict with themselves. They often feel like a victim, not a part of society, and emotions of blame, over-angry, over-sad, seem out of context. Symptoms are with a relationship issue, perhaps because you aren’t in one and would like to be, or are having problems with one.

Why drifting along is not a good approach

One of the problems is that relationships go along smoothly until something happens and then the couple can either pull together and make their relationship even better or can fall apart and get worse.

If the first happens I quite often find that only dramas can keep them together in a good way, so then one or the other in the relationship, will unconsciously find a drama in order to get that nice loving feeling back again and they keep that going which is extremely stressful and cannot work on the long term.

Of course, if the second happens then they could again end up with solicitors sorting their life out, but separately. Many people don’t see taking preventative steps is for them because they have to pay money for something they don’t need or indeed don’t think they need at that moment. Perhaps society should encourage an annual Relationship MOT test, but if your relationship is less than perfect, act now – why wait to do something about it?

My approach to taking your relationship to a better state

My approach is to take you from a current state to a better state. We will use imagination to help you change for the better. People have come back for the next session and said, they don’t know how but they’ve moved forward. During the sessions, I will listen hard to you, your story, and understand your emotions, including ones you aren’t allowing yourself to feel. Then I will help you reason out where you want to be and how to get there.

Often at the end of a session, you will go away with things to do, or reflect on the session, both aimed at helping clients change a newly discovered aspect, and do something different next time. This may not happen every time, as sometimes a range of feelings are released in a session, each needing a more individual focus.

At the end of each set of sessions you will feel yourself in a better place, have a better understanding of what is causing how you feel, and how to resolve this.
